Belgrade promises new projects for Kosovo Serbs by 2020

The Serbs in Kosovo will benefit from 76 new projects worth some 51.5 million Euros in the areas they live by 2020, Serbia’s Prime Minister has said on Tuesday, the Belgrade-based news agencies reported.

Addressing a meeting of the Serbian government with Kosovo Serb political leaders and President Aleksandar Vucic, Ana Brnabic added that the Government set up a working group with a task to draft a law >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << on financial aid to the Serbs in Kosovo.

The group should also define the ways for Belgrade’s more significant presence in the Serb populated areas.

Brnabic said that projects would include new factories, new jobs and the building of health service and educational premises.

The aim is, according to her, to “economically empower our people in Kosovo and Metohija and offer them yet another reason to stay there because that is the most important issue to us.”

She added that the last ten months were challenging for the Serbs in Kosovo, primarily because of the attacks on their property, but also due to Pristina’s announcement of the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into an army.

She reiterated that both her Government and Vucic advocate a peaceful solution to all issues and that their main concern is the regional stability.

The Belgrade – Pristina dialogue is on hold since September after Vucic and his Kosovo counterpart Hashim Thaci have not met face to face but have had separate meetings with the European Union Foreign and Security chief Federica Mogherini who mediates the talks.

There are no signs from either side when the dialogue might continue, although both Belgrade and Pristina say they hope it will be soon.

Thaci faces strong opposition at home for advocating border corrections to incorporate Serbia’s southern region mostly populated by ethnic Albanians into Kosovo. The opposition fears that will mean a territory swap.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj is also firmly against any border changes and has publicly criticised Thaci’s idea, saying the changes of borders would lead to new tragedies, in reference to the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.

On the other hand, Vucic cannot count on significant support for the boundary with Kosovo he advocates since according to the latest survey 44 percent of the polled have been against.

He has not made his concrete plans public yet except saying that it will not be possible for Pristina to get everything and for Belgrade to get nothing.
