Demarcation with Kosovo least painful idea, Serbia’s FM says
Serbia's Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has said that the demarcation with Kosovo is the least painful suggestion and that it includes that in addition to the northern part, all other areas populated by the Serbs which could be territorially linked to central Serbia remain parts of the country, the Beta news agency reported on Tuesday.
“I can’t see any less painful and more rational suggestion >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << than this one, nor I can think of something else more realistic at this moment,” Dacic told the RTV television from Serbia’s northern city of Novi Sad.
“We surely won’t discuss the recognition of Kosovo,” he added.
Dacic seems to be responding to Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci’s idea that involves a border correction to include Serbia’s southern region of Presevo Valley mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians into Kosovo’s territory.
Dacic said that the international community’s stand that there should not be border changes in the Balkans was “hypocritical,” adding that they were the first to have violated “the rights and borders and Serbia’s territorial integrity. Now they decided it could not happen.”
He said that in case of the continued frozen conflict northern Kosovo could be attacked (by the Albanians), but it could also freeze Serbia’s EU accession process.
“When we speak about the frozen conflict, in the long run, it could lead to an armed attack on the north of Kosovo. In such a situation, the state (Serbia) would have to decide whether it would involve into a clash or stay aside, as it did with Knin” (the capital of the so-called Republika Srpska Krajina which went back to Croatia in the Storm offensive to liberate the rebel Serbs’ held territories.)
“But,” Dacic warned, “our involvement in such conflict means a clash with the KFOR (NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo) which would seriously complicate Serbia’s position.”
