Old Belgrade railway station to close, minister says
People travelling by train will be using the new Beograd Centar railway station as of July 1 instead of the Serbian capital's old station, Serbian Minister of Construction, Traffic and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic said, adding that the decision to close down the old station is not recent.
“We are finishing the job started in the 1970s,” she said.
The new station, also known as Prokop, is prepared to take over all rail traffic, she said. “The important thing >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << is for all cargo, especially hazardous cargo, to be removed from the centre of the city,” Mihajlovic said.
The decision to put the new station there was not taken by accident because that is where the three branches of the Belgrade rail links converge, the minister said.
The decision to close down the city’s central railway station and remove all rail traffic from central parts of the Serbian capital drew protests from the public and experts some of who claimed the decision was taken because of the Belgrade Waterfront project.
