No vegetarian food for Serbia’s preschoolers
New regulations for kindergartens in Serbia envisage that all children should eat the same food, unless their health or religion demand otherwise, leaving the parents of vegetarian kids with no choice but to take them out of the kindergartens, N1 reported.
Until recently, the children who are brought up as vegetarians haven’t had problems. Their diet was respected, but since the new regulations came in force in April, the parents were told there would not be any meal without meat >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << any more.
One parent told N1 that a nutritionist advised him that since a law “doesn’t recognise them,” his daughters should start eating meat or he could take them out of the kindergarten.
The new regulations, a joint work of the ministries of health and education, say only health or religious reasons could change a menu.
The parent said he mentioned a religious reason, but was asked to provide a certificate from his religious community, what was an unconstitutional request.
The parents brought the issue up with the Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic, who said her office had recommended the preschool institutions to take care of the children diet for whatever reason.
“We, as a state, have committed ourselves to remove all kinds of discrimination of children, and that is the standard here, but obviously, we will have to face the violations of the law,” she told N1.
Jankovic added that she would rule on the parents’ appeal in 90 days.
