Mining waste registry being created in Serbia

The Ministry of Mining and Energy and the European Union Delegation in Serbia are working on a data base of all mining waste dumps in the country, a ministry press release said on Monday.

Expert teams toured 250 sites where waste from mining operations has been dumped and abandoned and will include all their analyses in the data base, it added.

The consortium working on the registry of mining waste said in a statement that it would make a detailed analyses of 41 waste >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << dumps which pose danger to the environment and the population. Those sites account for 90 percent of the mining waste in known dump sites, the German companies Plejades and DMT said in the statement.

The project is part of efforts to bring Serbian legislature in line with the European Union acqui communitaire and upgrade and developed mining waste management in the country. The project will have an estimated cost of 2.1 million Euros, 90 percent of which is being financed by the EU and 10 percent by the Serbian government.
