Macedonia name change proposed years ago
Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said on Tuesday that his predecessor Nikola Gruevski accepted the change of the country’s name to Upper or Northern Macedonia five years ago but Greece refused the proposal.
“Gruevski accepted the name Northern and Upper Macedonia in 2012, without the obligation of Greece accepting the national identity and language. That was left out there. Greece did not accept that solution because it had been provoked by the Skoplje 2014 project,” Zaev >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << told Kanal 5 TV.
The project was finance by the government and aimed at giving the Macedonian capital a more classic appearance by the year 2014. Zaev said proof of that proposal can be heard in illegally recorded conversations between top Macedonian officials.
Former Prime Minister Gruevski wrote recently on social networks that he refused a Greek proposal to name the former Yugoslav republic Northern Macedonia.
The Macedonian parliament is due to start an urgent debate on the agreement between Athens and Skoplje on the name change. An N1 reporter in Skoplje said that the agreement could be ratified as early as Wednesday.
