German Chancellor worries about border changes in Balkans

The Democratic Alliance of Kosovo (DSK) official said on Friday German Chancellor sent him a letter expressing concerns about talks on border changes between Belgrade and Pristina, the Beta news agency reported.

Isa Mustafa in September informed Angela Merkel, and the European Union foreign ministers about the DSK stand on the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue on normalisation of relations.

“I follow the border >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << change debate with the same concern as you do,” Merkel said in her reply, according to the Pristina RTK television.

The TV said Merkel also wrote that from her point of view it was vital for Kosovo to continue the dialogue with Serbia mediated by the EU and that the normalisation of relations goes on.

“I’m aware of the importance of a tourist visa free regime for your country. Germany sees the fulfillment of all criteria without exception as essential for visa liberalisation,” Merkel said in the letter to Mustafa, according to the RTK.

She added the consultations about the issue among the EU member states were underway.

The Belgrade - Pristina dialogue is on hold since July when the presidents Hashim Thaci of Kosovo and Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia last met face to face. The September meeting in Brussels only saw the two in separate talks with the EU Foreign and Security policy chief Federica Mogherini who mediates the negotiations.

Since then there has been no sign when the dialogue may resume.

Thaci advocated what he called the correction of the border to include Serbia's southern region mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians into Kosovo, and rejected any idea on the territory swap or the exchange of population.

On the other hand, Vucic said he wanted the separation from Albanians and the clear border with Kosovo.

In the meantime, the relations between the two capitals have worsen due to Kosovo's decision to form an army, the move Belgrade sees as a violation of the international rules and agreements reached so far.

There were also some ethnically-motivated attacks on both sides.
