Gunsmiths in Serbia continue strike
The workers in Serbia’s largest arms factory in the central town of Kragujevac remain on strike on Friday after negotiations with a minister produced no results.
The striking board of Zastava oruzje factory said they decided to go on with the general strike involving workers in all three shifts.
The decision followed the fruitless attempt to persuade the Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin to accept their most important demands.
Vulin rejected >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the workers’ call for the change of the management and better privatisation position. Instead, he agreed only to authorise an 85 Euros bonus and send an inspection to look into what the workers called “the most dangerous” parts of the factory regarding the safety and their health.
"Nowhere in the world, the unions can change the management because they do not own the factory. They cannot ask that their company is exempted from a law,” Vulin told the gunsmiths' delegation in Belgrade.
He asked them what would happen if the buyers start cancelling the deals? “In the end, the workers will feel the consequences because if there is no deal, there are no jobs and consequently no salaries,” Vulin said, calling on the strikers not to waste time and to honour the existing agreements.
Arms’ industry is one of Serbia’s most successful businesses, and any drop in exporting its products can seriously hit the country’s recovering economy.
The factory has sold its production until 2019 and expected 35-40 million dollars in exports into 40 countries, most of which are in the Middle East and Africa.
But, the company also exports its semi-automatic rifles to North America and Canada.
