State Dept official: US not advocating solution for Kosovo
Washington is not advocating any particular solution for Kosovo but is encouraging Belgrade and Pristina to take ownership of the project, US State Department official Matthew Palmer said at the annual Belgrade Security Forum on Friday.
“The United States does not have a preferred outcome to the dialogue. We are not advocating any particular solution, not putting ideas forward. We are trying to encourage the parties to take ownership of the project and find a common >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << path that can be embraced by the public on both sides,” Palmer said.
“We do not offer any formula or blank check,” he said.
Serbia and Kosovo have a historic opportunity to move forward but the fault line between them holds them both back, Palmer said and warned that there will be no winner if there is a winner and a looser in the process.
Both Serbia and Kosovo have European futures but cannot reach that goal and now is the time for compromise and for the parties to be flexible and creative, the deputy assistant Secretary of State said.
Asked about the idea of a possible exchange of territories, he said that it’s hard to talk about a plan that he hasn’t seen. “We haven’t seen a plan and until and unless an agreement is reached its hard to talk about it in the abstract,” Palmer said.
“We’re not unsympathetic to concerns that this could cause consequences elsewhere but the question is how can the risks be balanced. The parties should be encouraged to find path forward themselves. Reach an agreement, put it on the table and let’s look at it,” the State Department official said adding that the US will work with the parties to work out points of concern.
