Serbian President, PM react to US ambassador’s statement

US Ambassador Kyle Scott’s statement that the government of Kosovo is the government of a sovereign and independent state drew criticism from Serbia’s president and prime minister on Tuesday, who said he should show more respect to the host country and not make scandalous statements.

President Aleksandar Vucic told reporters that he wasn’t present when the ambassador corrected a reporter on Monday saying that the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << government in Pristina is not a so-called government, adding that he would have “given him a polite, moderate reply in defence of Serbia’s state interests”.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t present but a representative of the Serbian government should have reacted. The ambassador is not here to correct reporters but to answer questions,” the president said. Vucic said that “it would have been nice” if the US ambassador had shown “a little more respect to the host country”. That is their style as the strongest power in the world, he added.

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said Scott’s statement was “scandalous and unbelievable”. “I think that statement is inappropriate not just in terms of diplomacy but also in terms of a lack of respect for the host, especially because it was made in the seat of the Serbian government.

“Scott made those highly inappropriate statements at several meetings in the Serbian government,” she said, adding that she had reacted on several occasions saying that if she hears anyone call Kosovo a state she would interrupt the meeting and ask those people to leave the government building.
