Kosovo’s Thaci: French Macron supports border correction
Hashim Thaci, Kosovo's President, told Tirana-based Radio Televizioni Shqiptar TVSH on Friday his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron supported Belgrade – Pristina dialogue, as well as a possibility of border corrections with Serbia, the Beta news agency carried the KoSSev website report.
According to Thaci, Macron said he would like to see a legally binding document on normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina as soon as possible and did not exclude the border >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << correction, which Thaci said should include the annexation of Serbia’s southern region of Presevo Valley mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians, as a part of the solution.
Speaking to the TVSH, Thaci said that such a scenario “would open a Euro-Atlantic perspective for Kosovo, would not follow ethnic lines but would reflect Kosovo’s multi-ethnicity and the prospect of building a civil democracy in the country.”
Kosovo's President was in Yerevan, at the Francofonia (OIF) conference, where Pristina was admitted as an associate member to that international organisation.
Thaci’s idea about the border change has little support in Kosovo, with the opposition and even ruling coalition parties openly speaking against it, in fear it could also mean a territory swap, i.e., separation of Kosovo, with its northern part, mostly populated by ethnic Serbs, remaining a part of Serbia.
Thaci has excluded any exchange of territories and only advocates for the Presevo Valley secession from Serbia.
The international community generally opposes the idea, fearing a domino effect, but recently both the US and some European Union leaders have said that if the two sides agree, respecting the international law, any solution they come up with could be acceptable.
