Kosovo intellectual banned from entering Serbia
Serbia's border police banned Kosovo well-known writer and publicist Shkëlzen Maliqi from crossing the border without giving him any reason, a Belgrade daily reported.
Maliqi on his way to Serbia to take part at a book promotion, organised by the Belgrade Centre for Cultural Decontamination (CZKD), together with other Kosovo colleagues Besa Luci, Jerton Nbeziraj and Majlinda Hoxha who all refused to continue the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << journey out of solidarity.
Maliqi told the Danas daily that police asked him to leave a car at 5 am and to take his language out because he could not enter Serbia.
“They did not give me any reason, but told me to wait for a verification which could last until noon,” he said, adding he decided to go back to Kosovo.
The CZKD said later on Tuesday it had cancelled the promotion of the book "The Study of the Pertej’s Case” that spoke about 20 years of the independent cultural spheres cooperation.
The Centre said in a statement that it supported the Kosovo artists’ solidarity with Maliqi. back home.
The statement added it cancelled the event and would not hold it again until Kosovo colleague were not let to participate and until their freedom of movement was guaranteed.
On May 30, Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister Enver Hoxhaj said that Serbia’s police did not allow pictures with Kosovo’s and the Albanian flags to be brought in for the “Mirëdita, dobar dan” (good day in English) festival held in Belgrade. He described the the act as “shameful”.
The “Mirëdita, dobar dan” festival has been held in Belgrade since 2014, this year in the organisation of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights.
The festival’s website says “the festival seeks to establish the tradition of cooperation through arts, which will contribute to the permanent normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.”
