Demonstrators demand release of former Kosovo army commander

Several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Palace of Justice in Pristina on Wednesday demanding the release of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander and ex Kosovo envoy to Albania, the Beta news agency reported.

Suleiman Selimi was arrested in 2013 while serving as Pristina’s ambassador to Tirana, under suspicion of committing war crimes during the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo.

He was later charged and sentenced to six years in prison for the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << war crimes in 1998 known as the court case “Drenica 1.”

Kosovo’s Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Selimi and others in “Drenica 1” and “Drenica 2” cases.

The demonstrators said Selimi was imprisoned “unjustifiably and illegally.”

His lawyer Tom Gasi said that five-year-long detention without any court ruling was against the law.

“They were first convicted illegally, without any credible evidence, to satisfy someone’s wish. Following the appeal, the Supreme Court annulled all verdicts on June 11 and ordered a new trial,” Gasi said.

There was no information on when the new trial might start.
