Brnabic responds to criticism over Kosovo statement

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic responded to fierce criticism of her statement that Kosovo once was Serbia, saying that Serbia has to step out of its comfort zone and find a long-term solution because that is in the interest of both the country and the population.

“Kosovo was Serbia. Period. Now we have to find a compromise,” Branabic told German daily newspaper >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Die Welt on Tuesday.

“A compromise means that we have to leave our comfortable seats, comfortable views about Kosovo being Serbia and on Serbia recognizing Kosovo. Those are two things we have to abandon in order to start talking about a compromise. I personally think that Serbia will never recognize Kosovo’s independence but I also think that we have to be prepared to talk about whether Kosovo is Serbia. Kosovo is Serbia but what is it that represents a long-term normalization of relations with Pristina,” Brnabic said.

Recalling the increasingly frequent attacks against Serbs in Kosovo, the Prime Minister said that Serbia will never allow them to be expelled. “I said earlier that if the solution for Kosovo is to expel all Serbs, Serbia will not allow that. I expect the international community to understand that,” Brnabic said, adding that the international community does not know enough about the suffering of the Kosovo Serbs.
