Belgrade-Pristina agreement has to include UN membership
A final agreement between Belgrade and Pristina should change Kosovo’s relationship with the US and European Union but it stands little chance of success without UN membership, former US diplomat James Hooper told Radio Free Europe on Wednesday.
He said people in Kosovo have to realize the Washington’s views of the region differ to the views of Berlin and London. “The US now is not the same as it was >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << in 1998-99 or 2000. The situation has changed,” Hooper added.
He said the talks on a Belgrade-Pristina agreement should be viewed calmly without emotion. “Even though it is presented as debate on border, whether delimitation, correction or division, this is actually a discussion on an agreement which should change Kosovo’s relations with the US and EU in a positive sense. This is not just about Kosovo-Serbia relations,” Hooper said.
The Balkans expert also warned that changes to the border between Kosovo and Serbia could affect Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. “The stability of the region requires the international community to view this issue from a wider perspective. The EU and US should view these talks as a re-stabilization of the Balkans. The situation in Bosnia is not stable and there is always concern about Macedonia,” Hooper said.
According to him, it would be dangerous for Kosovo as a small country in an unstable region to mover forward with a hostile neighbor like Serbia. “Easing Serbia’s enmity is important to Kosovo. The road that Kosovo has taken is filled with holes and it needs a good driver,” Hooper said.
