Fires blazing in northern Serbia

Fires are blazing over more than 800 hectares of fields and woods, including a nature reserve, in the area around the Vojvodina town of Zrenjanin.

The fires are blazing out of control after farmers started burning the remains of this year’s harvested wheat on their fields. The fires reached the wooded areas in the Carska Bara nature reserve, the Zrenjanin >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << mayor’s cabinet said in a press release.

Professional and volunteer firefighters tackled the blaze with 15 vehicles but found it hard to control because of strong winds, the media reported, adding that farmers are using their heavy machinery to clear a belt around the fires to prevent them from spreading.

The Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP) Emergency Situations Sector appealed to farmers not to clear their wheat fields with fire, adding that there were seven times more brush fires than last year. Serbian firefighters reported 1,431 fires in the open this year and just 216 in the same period of 2017.
