Eurostat: Women live longer and outnumber men
In all European Union member states, as well as in Serbia, women live longer than men and outnumber the opposite sex, a Eurostat latest research, carried by the Politika daily, showed.
The Eurostat's survey showed that at every 100 men there were 105 women and that most significant discrepancies were in Latvia where there were 18 percent more women, and in Estonia where women led with 113 to 100 over men.
Although Serbia is not an EU member, local statistics also show >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << that the women, whose life expectancy is 78 years of age, live five years longer than men. In the EU, the life expectancy for women is 83.3 years, while men live 77.9 years on average, though there are significant differences among countries.
Eurostat’s survey also shows that there are 181,228 more women in Serbia and that the sex imbalance is explicitly present in cities where women outnumber men by far, while more men live in the countryside.
It also says that an average woman in Serbia spends an hour and a half a day cooking, while a man stays no longer than ten minutes in the kitchen.
Men in the EU incline to unhealthy habits more than women, i.e., 25 perecnt of men smoke every day in comparison to 16 percent of women.
The highest number of smokers are in Austria and Cyprus.
Malignant tumours, heart attacks and strokes are the most common cause of death in both the EU and Serbia and more men die from them.
Regarding professional life, the survey shows that women find their first employment at the age of 23, a year later than men, and retire at the age of 58.8, a year earlier than men.
In the EU, only 33 percent of women are managers, with Latvia leading the list with 47 percent, and Luxembourg being at the end with only 18 percent of women in managerial job.
In Serbia, 30 percent of a total number of entrepreneurs are women.
