Vucic: Protest over fuel prices was politically organised
Friday’s blocking of streets was politically organised as opposition leaders were the ones who had called on citizens to join the protest over the increase of fuel prices, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday.
Drivers in a number of cities and towns across Serbia had turned off their engines and stopped traffic on Friday afternoon to protest high fuel prices.Streets were blocked in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac and other towns.
Fuel prices were >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << raised recently to 1.24 Euro a litre of petrol and 1.3 Euro a liter of diesel fuel. Protesting drivers said none should cost more than 1 Euro per litre.
The President said that whoever wants to protest is welcome to do so, but should not break the law.
He said that opposition in Serbia has been claiming that some 1,000 people took part in the protest but that in reality "two cars stop in front of a city bus in front of the Pancevo bridge and a number of vehicles stop behind them."
He asked how come nobody praises him over “us having the lowest price of bread” and over Serbia having the lowest electricity prices in Europe.
"Bread is not important, electricity is not important, fuel is important," he remarked.
