US envoy: Pristina and Belgarde to decide on division

The US ambassador to Pristina told the KTV Pristina television that a deal on an eventual partition of Kosovo depended on the two capitals, thus changing his rhetoric from the past when he used to say that the division was a dangerous option.

Speaking to the TV’s political show Rubicon late on Thursday, Greg Delawie did not repeat his statement from December that American stand on the division of Kosovo was the red line in their policy in the region.

Asked >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << if he ruled out the partition, the envoy said he would not comment on issues that would be a part of a final agreement, and reiterated that the US support for Kosovo’s independence remained and was unwavering.

“I will not speak about the details, about in which hall or at which roundtable discussion that will happen. Especially not if that would be ahead of the talks involving a larger number of Kosovo's political parties. Everyone should participate and speak about all the issues,” he said.

Delawie added that Kosovo should determine its goals, adding that  “the efforts should be made to reach some consensus about those goals, and these are the issue I’m currently focused on.”

“I think that just now Kosovo is at a unique historical moment when it can secure its future, the future of its children and to leave behind the nervousness, tensions and contradictions present in the Kosovo – Serbia relations during last years,” Delawie said.

He added that it was “important to focus how to secure better future for all citizens both in Kosovo and Serbia and how to find the ways to normalise the relations which we have been dealing with for so long.”

The partition of Kosovo has so far been officially taken off the table by the international community since no Pristina politician said they would accept that.
