Slain Kosovo Serb leader’s brother: His murder is political

The brother of the assassinated Kosovo Serb leader said on Thursday he believed Oliver Ivanovic was killed in a “premeditated, professional way with a political background,” the Beta news agency reported.

Miroslav Ivanovic, a Kosovo Appeal Court judge, told the Danas daily that “Oliver was politically eliminated because he was a political hindrance.”

Oliver Ivanovic, who headed a Serb political organisation in Kosovo, Civic Initiative Serbia, Democracy, Justice (GI SDP) was gunned down outside his party’s headquarters in the Serb-dominated Northern Mitrovica, on January 16.

Before the assassination, official Belgrade and a part of politically active Kosovo Serbs branded Ivanovic as a traitor to national interests. Seven months later there is no any official result of an investigation launched after his death, and Miroslav Ivanovic said he also had no information about the probe.

Asked if his brother was killed as a potential opponent to an eventual separation with Kosovo, Ivanovic said it was “very possible.”

“Oliver had a different view (from the official Belgrade) on the partition or separation, and had spoken openly about it many times, especially by the end of 2017, ahead of the assassination,” Ivanovic said.

He added that the political leaders from both Belgrade and Pristina had commented on the murder and that sometimes “they were so concrete that one could feel that the next statement would be who were the perpetrators and organisers.”

Ivanovic said the truth about his brother’s murder could be a chip in a political trade among Belgrade, Pristina and the international community, adding that the Kosovo judiciary was able to solve the case, but “it has to come to a court. The police and prosecutors have to finish their job first.”
