Serbian writer against rehabilitation of WW2 collaborator

A prominent Serbian Jewish writer has warned against the rehabilitation of the World War 2 head of the collaborationist government of Serbia.

Author Filip David said the rehabilitation of Milan Nedic, a royal army general and head of the Serbian government under Nazi occupation, would be greatly shameful for Serbia as well as being an attempt to rewrite history.

“I can’t believe that this could happen but if Nedic is rehabilitated it would mean that Serbia has crossed >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << over to the side of the occupiers. The anti-fascist struggle would be completely set aside and the people who served the occupiers and obeyed their orders would come to the forefront,” David said.

Milan Nedic was appointed head of the collaborationist government by the Nazi administration following the occupation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. German war-time documents show that he advocated anti-Semitism and spoke out against resistance to the Nazis. Nedic was indicted for treason by the post-war Yugoslav authorities but died before being brought to court. Nedic’s family has requested his rehabilitation and the return of property seized when he was indicted for treason.

David said the German occupation authorities’ reports show Nedic’s anti-Semitic views. “In one of his first meetings with German representatives Nedic said that Belgrade and Serbia should be cleansed of Jews because there will be no peace for as long as one them exists since the Serbs have emotional and family ties with the Jews,” David said on the N1 Novi Dan show.

“I am surprised by the lack of interest in the public for the attempted rehabilitation since there are so many documents about Milan Nedic’s role during the occupation,” David said and recalled that Nedic was indicted after being handed over to the Yugoslav post-war government by the Allies. Nedic was reported to have committed suicide by throwing himself out of the window of an interrogation room, a claim that has been disputed by his family and some historians.
