Retired general to sue Serbian president

A former Serbian chief of general staff turned politician said on Wednesday the he would be suing President Aleksandar Vucic for calling him a spy.

Retired General Zdravko Ponos told Belgrade daily Danas that Vucic does not have the courage to appear in court “because he has not considered himself a citizen but the state for a long time”. “He does not have the courage to face anyone, not in court or on TV or at the Red Star stadium. Vucic called Ponos a spy after the retired general said recently that the presidential order to raise combat readiness was demeaning to the military and upsetting to the population. The order was issued after Kosovo President Hashim Thaci visited the Gazivode Lake with a strong police escort which the Serbian authorities said was the ROSU police special forces unit.

Ponos said the idea to raise combat readiness did not come from the general staff, adding that he was not criticizing Vucic for raising combat readiness but for manipulating the public with that untruth and demeaning the military by bringing it down to the level of “a sparing partner for Thaci’s security detail”. “As if it wasn’t enough that he and Thaci spar regularly to fan the flames in public while making sure that neither one’s makeup is ruined,” he said.

Every crisis situation worthy of TV images in Kosovo featured Vucic, Thaci and (Kosovo Prime Minister) Ramush Haradinaj and their associates, Ponos said.
