Refugee children start school year in Serbia
Some 400 migrant children started the school year with their Serbian peers this week, including 50 high school students, Serbia’s Refugee Commissioner Vladimir Cucic said on Tuesday.
Speaking after visiting the asylum centre in Belgrade’s Krnjaca suburb, Cucic said that the important thing is that they continue their education.
“The important thing for these children is the fact that their educations have not been interrupted. Whether they go home, or stay here >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << or go somewhere else, every day spent in school will mean something,” he said after delivering 81 sets of school supplies to the migrant children at the centre.
According to official figures, 348 migrant children are attending 33 elementary schools and another 40 have started pre-school.
Cucic recalled that Serbia was the only country on the so-called migrant route which introduced mandatory elementary and pre-school attendance for migrant children.
Serbia is currently home to less than 4,000 migrants, 3,300 of who are in refugee centres.
