Opposition leader, minister take different views of protest
Serbian opposition leader Sasa Jankovic tweeted on Monday that a state of alert was ordered for some Serbian police units as of Tuesday morning while the country’s Internal Affairs Minister warned that the government is not prepared to talk under pressure from protests over the price of fuel.
“No one will dictate the behaviour of the government from the street. We always want to discuss all topics but the street will never dictate the way the government acts,” Minister Nebojsa >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Stefanovic told reporters in comments on the protests by drivers unhappy with high fuel prices.
“These people have to know that they are breaking the law on public gatherings,” he said and specified that drivers who park their cars on the streets or on highways will be charged with misdemeanours.
Opposition Movement of Free Citizens leader Sasa Jankovic tweeted that he wants to believe that the fact that police intervention units have been ordered to be on a high state of alert as of Tuesday morning at 04:00 am has noting to do with the protests.
“I hope that this man is not underestimating the people and not forgetting that the police are its part,” he tweeted, adding that state of alert means being ready to go into action but not deploying on the streets unless public order is violated.
