European Parliament adopts resolution on Western Balkans
The European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday adopted a draft resolution on the Western Balkans which says that a border agreement between Belgrade and Pristina is acceptable only if it does not endanger regional stability.
The draft resolution, submitted by the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Serbia David Macalister says that the European Union mediated dialogue has to set the framework for the agreement which will be acceptable if it respects international >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << law.
It adds that the European Parliament will support only an agreement which brings a normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina without threatening the stability of the region or making border problems worse.
Macalister said after the resolution was adopted that the date of EU membership for the countries of the Western Balkans depends on when each state adopts and implements the acqui communitaire.
The draft resolution says that Serbia has achieved some progress in combating corruption and organized crime while Montenegro has achieved moderate progress in strengthening the independence, transparency and effectiveness of the judiciary, he said and added that the countries of the region had to work harder on introducting EU values, especially in regard to human rights, combatting corruption and reforming the state administration and judiciary.
The resolution expressed concern over the state of freedom of speech and listed failures in reforming the judiciary and combating corruption and organized crime as well as the shortcomings in the democratic role of parliament and called the Serbian authorities to guarantee the principled implementation of laws protecting national minorities.
