Belgrade Military Museum marks 140th anniversary
Belgrade’s Military Museum is marking its 140th anniversary with an exhibition about, among other things, the Obrenovic and Karadjordjevic royal dynasties who museum head Gradimir Matic said played a role in setting up the museum.
“The exhibit includes items from the middle ages, Yugoslavia, a number of awards and military citations, a 10th century ring, Cossack flags and many other items,” Lt Colonel Matic said.
Defence Ministry State Secretary Aleksandar Zivkovic >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << recalled at the opening that the museum was set up under an decree issued by Prince Milan Obrenovic in 1878 when Serbia declared independence and that it’s first exhibition was opened in 1904 to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1st Serbian Uprising againt Ottoman rule. “The museum is an important segment of the culture and memory of the nation,” he said.
The museum now houses more than 30,000 items and has a collection of some 100,000 photographs along with a 15,000 volume library.
The anniversary celebration continued with a gathering at the Army Guards House when a presidential envoy presented the museum chiefs with a decoration for services to the nation, the Defence Ministry said in a press release.
The gathering was attended by Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin, chief of staff General Ljubisa Dikovic and representatives of the ministry, Army of Serbia, religious communities and institutions of culture.
