Advisor says Thaci, Haradinaj motivated by personal interest
Hashim Thaci’s former advisor says that the Kosovo president and Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj have taken opposing views of the idea of changing borders out of personal interest.
Belul Beqaj told BIRN that President Thaci believes he can reap political profits from a deal with Serbia while Haradinaj believes he will profit if the the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue under European Union auspices just ends.
Beqaj said that the only difference between them is in their >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << approach, adding that their motives are identical and that both a equally manipulative. “Both of them see the dialogue as an opportunity to strengthen their positions in the political hierarchy, not as a chance to resolve open issues between Serbia and Kosovo,” he said.
The former presidential advisor recalled the situation following the signing of the agreement on a border demarcation with Montenegro which Haradinaj opposed. Isa Mustafa’s government was toppled and Haradinaj formed a coalition with Thaci’s party to become the new prime minister. “Both of them achieved their goal. Thaci became an unavoidable political player and Haradinaj became the most important kleptocrat in power,” he said.
The Kosovo prime minister publicly voiced fierce opposition to the president’s idea of a “border correction” with Serbia which culminated in last week’s meeting of senior political officials and the president and the government’s decision to form a Unity Team which would decide on any Belgrade-Pristina agreement instead of the president.
