Strike at Serbia's Zastava Weapons plant
Employees at the Zastava arms factory in the town of Kragujevac stopped work for a one-hour protest strike on Monday.
The Zastava employees gathered on the square in front of the company’s management offices to say they are opposed to the privatization of the plant. Zastava Oruzje is Serbia’s oldest military industry plant.
Strike organizers said they would go to Belgrade on Tuesday, adding that >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the strike would continue until the factory management resigns. The strikers are blaming Zastava Oruzje’s problems on the current management.
The organizers called former Zastava staff and everyone opposed to the privatization of the plant to protest in the central city square in Kragujevac on Tuesday.
Monday’s strike started a half hour late because plant security staff chained and locked the gates.The chains were removed after a short struggle between employees and security guards.
The union is demanding the payment of an overdue bonus of 15,000 Dinars, no pay cuts, holiday bonus payments and better working conditions for all 2,500 employees.
