Serbian Roma street vendors’ protest in Kragujevac

Roma street vendors gathered in front of city hall in Kragujevac on Tuesday to protest the local authorities’ decision to ban them from selling their goods outside the city’s green market.

The street vendors, most of them Roma, said they would bring their second hand goods to sell in front of city hall on Wednesday and would block a main road next week even though the city government has said that open air stalls >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << free of charge have been secured for them on the outskirts of the city.

The Roma residents of the central Serbia city have sold second hand goods of all kinds on the street outside the central city open air market but the communal police have decided to ban them from the area, claiming that the street vendors are blocking a fire evacuation route.

Roma Party leader Dragan Vasic told N1 that the 50-60 families just want to be left to sell their goods where they were before, to the left and right of the evacuation route while city communal services chief Andreja Ilic said that the local government has secured much better working conditions for the Roma families who do not want to move to the market on the outskirts.

The Roma street vendors said they would complain to international organizations and the US Embassy in Belgrade.
