Local Communities Against Climate Change
City of Kragujevac hosted today’s Conference on climate change and challenges of climate policies at local level, adapting to climate change, risks preventions within the local communities development policy as key topics.
The Embassy of the Republic of France organized a serial of activities aimed at raising the awareness of the public, local communities and local stakeholders whose policies and ambition are precious for adapting to climate change. They discussed policies against climate change, the mobilization of the local government against climate change as well as adequate programmes development. Her Excellency Madame Christine Moro, Ambassador of the Republic of France to Serbia and the Mayor of Kragujevac, Radomir Nikolic, opened the conference.
Adapting to climate change is of extreme significance for Serbia due to the fact that our country is in one of the region most affected by the climate change. The proof is last year’s floods that severely impacted already vulnerable and fragile economy. Floods further influenced the sustainability of the towns in the country, too. Local government is responsible to adopt and adapt strategies that fight against climate change at the local level. Today’s gathering was the opportunity to better understanding of the world’s practices and accordingly helpful for the forthcoming adoption of the most serious strategies in the City of Kragujevac. We will let experts to tell us what we are to do - said the Mayor of Kragujevac, Mr. Radomir Nikolic.
Local communities have significant role in the process of fighting against climate change by providing for the improved access to environmental information and education. Each country will take actions to adapting to the impacts of climate change and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
Today conference is dedicated to the crucial role of the local government in solving the issues of the climate and the fact that local governments manage the communal wastes and decide on the economy activities on their territories. Representatives of the number of Serbian municipalities, committed and already implementing numerous projects will talk today with the representatives of the French municipalities about most important aspects related to climate change – said Her Excellency Madame Christine Moro, Ambassador of the Republic of France to Serbia.
France is preparing international Paris Climate Conference aimed at international long - term agreement, with the commitment of civil society, to fight against climate change. The agreement would enable global warming limiting to 2 degrees that is ambitious but reachable aim if collective efforts are achieved.
