Vucic & US envoy for reducing tensions

Serbia's President and US Ambassador to Belgrade met after the Kosovo incident and agreed that problems should be solved in a peaceful and steady way

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic and the US ambassador to Belgrade Kyle Scott agreed on Wednesday (March 28) that tensions following the events in Kosovska Mitrovica should be reduced and any provocation >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << should be avoided.

Scott and Vucic talked about Belgrade – Pristina relations which were crippled by Kosovo police action in Mitrovica during which the chief of Serbia’s government Office for Kosovo Marko Djuric – who went to Mitrovica in spite of Pristina’s ban and warning about an arrest – was briefly detained.

Over 30 Serbs sought medical attention following police intervention, Serb doctors in Kosovo said.

The two also discussed Vucic’s conversation with Wess Mitchell, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs that took place late Tuesday, said the statement from Vucic’s office.

Kosovo Serbs walked out of Pristina government and decided to start forming the Community of Serb Municipalities (CMS) themselves as of April 20, if Kosovo authorities fail to do that as stipulated by the Brussels Agreement in 2013.

Pristina threatened it would arrest those who try to form the CMS on their own and that it could only be done in accordance with Kosovo laws and Constitution.

Scott and Vucic agreed that both sides should remain calm and approach the problems and solve them in a steady manner. The statement said that the two also advised all involved to avoid any steps which could further complicate the already tense situation.

According to the statement, the US envoy appealed to both sides to focus on normalisation of relations through dialogue and EU mediation, expressing his country’s willingness to support all sides in the process.

Vucic said that neither Serbia, nor Serbs and Serb representatives bore any guilt for the incidents, but “absolutely agreed with Scott that the preservation of peace and stability was of the greatest interest of everyone living in the region”, the statement from President’s office said.
