Thaci opposed to decision to form Kosovo military
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci spoke out on Thursday against the government’s decision to initiate the forming of a military to replace the current security forces.
Thaci said the decision was taken at the wrong time and added that it sends the wrong message on the day when the European Parliament gave its support to the liberalization of the visa regime for citizens of >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Kosovo.
He said Kosovo has the right to transform the Kosovo Security Forces into a military. “Should we do that, we should, should we start the process, we should, but in full coordination with the US and NATO,” Thaci said and warned that any other step could bring political confusion and have negative international consequences.
The US and rest of the international community are insist on constitutional amendments and changes to the law as the only way to transform the security forces into a military force.
The US Embassy in Pristina said in a press release that it had not been consulted over the government’s decision to initiate the transformation of the security forces, adding that it would analyze the adopted laws.
The United States always support the sovereign right of Kosovo to an army and worked closely with Kosovo on ways to achieve that. We advised a cautious approach which would keep Kosovo within the framework of the agreement with our NATO allies on this important issue. We were not consulted on this announcement and we will have to analyze the draft laws to understand their purpose and effect, the press release said.
