Serbian nationalists protest over Albanian culture festival
The youth wings of two Serbian nationalist parties organized a performance in front of the venue of a festival intended to bring together people from Kosovo and Serbia proper.
The Mirdita, Dobar Dan (good day in Albanian and Serbian) Festival has been organized in Belgrade by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights as an opportunity for a cultural exchange for the past five years. The festival is scheduled to open on May >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << 30 and will include the screening of movies, exhibitions by artists from Belgrade and Pristina and a debate on Serbian-Albanian relations.
Members of the youth wings of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and the Dveri movement gathered in front of Belgrade’s Youth Hall for a performance titled Mirdita, Laku Noc (good day in Albanian and good night in Serbian) which included an exhibition of photographs of Serbian cultural heritage sites in Kosovo.
The ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) called for a ban on the festival and threatened to use every available means to prevent it.
The Serbian police has banned all gatherings by ultra-nationalists during the festival.
