Search continues for missing in Kosovo, Serbia
The search for people who went missing during the war in Kosovo will continue in a number of locations in Kosovo and Serbia proper, the Kosovo government‘s Missing Persons Commission said in a report on Friday.
Possible mass grave site locations are being investigated in the Djakovica area and forensic teams are waiting for warrants from prosecutors for another six locations, Commission spokesman Kushtrim Gara >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << told a consultative meeting in the government headquarters in Pristina.
"We have been working in Djakovica since April 4 and we should continue investigating other sites for which the Special Prosecutor has issued warrants. Special attention will be devoted to two wells in Novo Brdo and a site outside the town of Djakovica as well as the Suvo Grlo site. We also have six sites waiting for warrants, including sites being investigated by the Kosovo Police war crimes unit. There will be at least another four sites to investigate,” Gara said.
He added that the missing persons issue will be part of the Kosovo government’s platform for the dialogue with Belgrade and added that Pristina will coordinate its efforts with its international partners “especially for sites inside Serbia in the Raska and Novi Pazar areas”.
“The international community should put more pressure to bear to start excavations and find the truth about the missing,” Gara said.
The meeting was attended by UNDP representatives and the British Ambassador in Pristina Ruairí O’Connell who said that the lack of information and justice for the missing and their families is a challenge for society as a whole, adding that he hopes the issue will be on the agenda of the London Summit in July. The authorities in Pristina have listed 1,650 people as still missing after the war in Kosovo.
