Pristina to asses contested Trepca mines value

Kosovo authorities said on Wednesday they had formed a group to assess the value of the Trepca mines, a large metallurgical complex in Kosovo some nine kilometres north-east of the town of Mitrovica, once a Yugoslav industrial giant, the KosSev website reported.

The government gave the group three months for the task.

Kosovo has never assessed the Trepca value, and the last estimate from 1992, years >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << before the armed conflict started in the ex-Serbia’s province, put the cost at 85 billion US dollars.

The official Trepca shareholders before 1999 were Serbia’s Development Fund with 55.1 percent and several companies from Serbia, two banks from Kosovo’s north and the Montenegrin port of Bar.

Ex-Yugoslavia used to help the development of Kosovo as one of its most impoverished regions, and the Trepca complex real estates were situated all over the former country, with some located in Serbia proper.

Belgrade maintains its right to the giant, while Pristina says it is Kosovo’s asset as it used to be during the former Yugoslavia when Kosovo was a Serbia's province with a high level of autonomy.

Following the violent break-up of the former Balkan country, Kosovo declared the independence in 2008 and claimed the right to all companies on its territory.
