Pristina protesters demand PM and prosecutor’s resignations

The “Protest” organisation staged a march on state institutions on Wednesday in Kosovo’s capital demanding the resignations of the Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj and the state prosecutor Alexander Lumezi, the Beta news agency reported.

Some 1,000 people gathered for the protest which the organisers said was needed because “the judiciary is in the service of politics.”

The police empowered the security outside the state prosecutor’s office, while some >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << opposition MPs joined the protest.

The protesters carried banners reading “Go, Lumezi,” “No state without independent judiciary,” “(Agim) Çeku – from a hero to zero,” and alike.

Also on Wednesday, the European Union's Office in Kosovo called on politicians and institutions to keep hands off the judiciary and refrain from offensive statements.

Elez Blakaj, a prosecutor who resigned over threats for trying to prosecute the case of the former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), accused Lumezi of attempting to interfere in the case.

Blakaj alleged that Lumezi warned him not to call the Kosovo parliament Speaker and the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK) Kadri Veseli as a witness.

Çeku, the Kosovo Security Forces Minister, headed the Commission tasked with establishing the status of the KLA veterans.

Lumezi said on Wednesday he would resign if the Council of Prosecutors ruled he violated the law or the ethics code.

“I consider that option (the demand for resignation), and if the Council of Prosecutors says I should be ousted, that’s all right,” but added he would not “accept the pressure from the civil society or certain individuals, or allow that politics influences the work of the state prosecutor.”

Speaking in a television interview Haradinaj called Blakaj a thief, saying he had not participated in the 1998-1999 war against Belgrade military and police forces, but “stole chickens.”

"He is a thief, not I. We provided him with all the necessary conditions for the job. I gave him an office in the government building. That is not the violation of justice, that’s the abuse of truth,” Haradinaj told reporters after the cabinet session.
