Presevo official: Only all three boroughs can join Kosovo
The head of Presevo municipality, part of Serbia’s southern region of Presevo Valley, said on Wednesday there was no way he would accept that the two out of three boroughs joined Kosovo, while one remained in Serbia, the FoNet news agency reported.
Sqiprim Arifi told the Koha Ditore daily that the ethnic Albanians would not agree that half of any municipalities remain in Serbia.
“Under no circumstances, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << a single village should be separated from the whole of Presevo (Valley),” he said, adding there was a political party which was ready to exchange a village in Serbia for one in Kosovo but did not name it.
“That’s senseless, and it violates the Republic of Kosovo,” Arifi said.
He commented on a public suggestion by the Albanians both form Kosovo and Serbia that the Belgrade - Pristina dialogue should include this Serbia’s region on its agenda and that it should secede from Belgrade and join Pristina.
Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci launched the idea, calling it “border correction” between Belgrade and Pristina.
He faces opposition from some political parties at home, while it seemed highly unlikely that Belgrade would accept that since Thaci had not offered anything in return.
The ethnic breakdown of the Presevo Valley population shows the Albanians form a vast majority in Presevo, while the Serbs dominate in Medvedja and both make up the similar percentage of Bujanovac people.
The data go back to 2002 because the ethnic Albanians mostly boycotted the 2012 census.
The European Union and the international community, in general, do not approve any border change, fearing a domino effect in the region and beyond.
German Chancellor Angel Merkel has said there would not be any border change in the Western Balkans, but both Thaci and Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic had been talking about either border correction or separation respectively.
However, the international community has said it would endorse any agreement reached by Belgrade and Pristina.
