MEP concerned over Kosovo visa liberalization
European Parliament rapporteur Tanja Fajon MEP expressed concern on Tuesday over the visa liberalization process for Kosovo, saying the process should not be used for political purposes.
“It’s unacceptable for some politicians to try to make the process political, set new conditions and postpone the abolishing of visas for the citizens of Kosovo,” Fajon told Radio Free Europe.
She said that it’s >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << not fair that the European Union is doing nothing even though all the requirements have been met and added that the decision could be adopted as soon as the EU member state governments approve it. “We are entering a European election year. A new parliament and commission are about to be elected and as rapporteur I will do everything in my power to complete this by the end of my term in office. The goal is within reach and what we need now are courage and political will. That exists in the European Parliament. The question is whether it exists among member states,” she said.
Fajon insisted on the EU member states applying the same standards for Kosovo as they did for the Ukraine and Georgia, warning that the EU will loose credibility if that principle is not respected.
She recalled that the European Commission concluded in July that Kosovo met all criteria and that the European Parliament lent support to the abolishing of the visa regime in September.
“I warned several times that the ball is in the court of the EU member state government and called them to take a decision while Austria holds the presidency. We will continue pressuring the EU governments,” Fajon said. She said Kosovo had to continue implementing the necessary conditions.
