Kosovo's opposition against Thaci leading Brussels talks

Kosovo opposition lawmakers object the idea of President Hashim Thaci heading the country’s delegation at the negotiations about the normalization of relations with Belgrade that will take place in Brussels.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramus Haradinaj called upon lawmakers to reach a national consensus and to get involved in the final phase of the dialogue. He said that the process should not be used to “exert >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << revenge on each other.”

“Internal political turmoils are continuous and they go on throughout life. But we must analyze sensitive topics, as is this one is, so that we can tend to this issue,” he said.

His deputy, Fatmir Ljimaj, said that the time when one person was making decisions on behalf of Kosovo is long gone.

“A good agreement is good for the country, a bad agreement will affect our entire lives. The Parliament cannot be an observer. We can remain observers and notice the mistakes, but those mistakes will harm the state,” he said.

“An important moment is ahead of us, we need to find a formula for the team and a formula for the platform and principles and we need to be prepared to conclude this process,” he added.

A lawmaker from the Social Democratic Party said, Dardan Molicaj, said that the resolution his party proposed aims to normalize the situation concerning the dialogue with Serbia, so that a joint decision can be made.

A lawmaker from the Democratic Initiative, Miljaim Zeka, called upon all political parties to meet and come up with a political platform based on which Kosovo will act in Brussels.

“Should we put one together, President Taci should not stray away from it,” he said.

According to Self-Determination party leader Aljbin Kurti, Serbia’s potential EU membership depends on the agreement with Kosovo. He criticized the continuation of the dialogue and any potential new agreements without the implementation of what was already agreed, saying that the goal was dialogue, not new agreements.

“Serbia’s dependence on Kosovo lies in Chapter 35. Serbia’s main goal is to create an asymmetric association (of Serb municipalities), with North Mitrovica being the capital,” he said.

Democratic League of Kosovo lawmaker Vjosa Osmani said that no political leader should sign an agreement with Serbia which breaches Kosovo’s sovereignty and opposes the principle of statehood, but that only the people can decide on something like that in a referendum.
