Kosovo’s Thaci: Rugova also advocated territory swap
Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci said on Thursday that the late Pristina’s leader also promoted the exchange of territories with Belgrade, the Zeri daily reported, but Ibrahim Rugova’s close ally told a website he did not remember those words.
“There won't be a partition of Kosovo, but the exchange of territories,” Thaci quoted Rugova, adding it was “a realistic and bold President Rugova’s position >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << in 1994.”
He did not say where or whom to Rugova said that.
“In the meantime, my position today, as the President of the Republic of Kosovo, has evolved and is clear: no division, no exchange, only correction of borders between Kosovo and Serbia in order to enable the (Serbia’s southern region mostly populated by the ethnic Albanians) Presevo Valley to join Kosovo,” Thaci wrote.
However, one of Rugova’s closest allies and a founder of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) Milazim Krasniqi said he did not remember those Rugova’s words.
Professor Krasniqi told the Kallxo website that in the 1990s there were three options for Kosovo from Pristina's point of view: if Yugoslavia survived, Kosovo would be a republic (instead of Serbia’s province); if internal borders were opened, all Albanians would be in one republic within Yugoslavia, and if the boundaries changed, Kosovo would secede and join Albania.
He added that the third option – Kosovo as an independent republic – was most acceptable to the Albanians.
“As I remember, the document on the territory swap did not get support. The only official document (from Pristina) was the one with those three options.”
