Kosovo special prosecutor quits over threats

Kosovo’s Special prosecutor Elez Blakaj resigned over threats, the state prosecutor told Pristina media on Wednesday.

The chief prosecutor Aleksander Lumezi said that Blakaj was under threats, supposedly due to an investigation in the Pristina mosque Imam Sefcet Krasniqi, and lately because of a probe into suspected manipulation with the list of former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

The >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Gazetaexpress website quoted Lumezi as saying Blakaj was under protection whenever he reported the threats.

The Insajderi website reported that during the investigation into the Imam, some people threatened Blakaj’s children who were then put under the police protection. Blakaj did not ask for personal safeguard then.

“The prosecutor Blakaj was on vacation when he informed the chief special prosecutor that he had quitted the position, without any explanation for the move,” Lumezi told the Insajderi website.

Blakaj has worked on the case involving the KLA fighters, an ethnic Albanian guerrilla force that fought against Belgrade military and police during the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo, who were suspected of terrorist links.
