Kosovo postpones introduction of new dialling code
Kosovo’s top telecommunications body has decided to postpone the introduction of the +383 dialling code to the end of October, one of that body’s officials told Radio Free Europe on Monday.
Kreshnik Gashi, Chairman of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications (ARKEP) said the decision was taken following requests from two mobile phone service providers.
The single dialing code for >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Kosovo was scheduled to be introduced on 30 June.
Gashi said that mobile phone service operators Vala and Ipko requested more time to get ready for the change from the +386 international dialing code to the new +383 code.
Kosovo was allocated its own dialing code in December 2016 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) following talks between Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels. Under the agreement, the +383 code was allocated as geographic area code, not a national code and the Serbian authorities were allowed to register a mobile phone company to provide services in majority Serb areas. Kosovo now has three mobile and land line telephone service providers all using foreign international codes – Vala mobile uses the Monaco +377 code, IPKO uses Slovenia’s +386 and the land line services use Serbia’s +381.
The Kosovo government was reported to have paid more than 200 million Euro to use those country codes on its territory.
