Kosovo monk says attacks orchestrated
Abbot Sava Janjic of the Visoki Decani monastery in Kosovo said that the attacks on him had been agreed as part of preparations for a referendum on Kosovo and to draw attention away from the people who launched the attacks.
Brother Sava told the Wednesday issue of Belgrade daily Danas that he does not believe that he is in danger following the attacks by state officials and some Belgrade media which have been “attacking a monk with their tabloid-intelligence machinery >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << of lies”. “We live normally here with daily church services and guests at the monastery. Placing this much political weight on a monk in regime-controlled media just shows that what the monk is saying hurts someone and that is the truth,” Sava Janjic said.
He added that the attacks on him were agreed at a session of the Serbian Council for National Security. Criticism of Brother Sava came from the leading Belgrade-backed Kosovo Serb party the Serb List which said he was no longer a spiritual leader but was a participant in political life with what that party called public statements against his state and efforts to solve the Kosovo problem through compromise and dialogue.
“He is slyly hiding behind his monk’s robes, counting on that being his best protection against the opinions of others and confirmation that he is not advocating his own interests but is voicing some kind of higher truth which cannot be criticized,” the Serb List press release said.
