Kosovo imposes higher taxes on imports from Serbia, Bosnia

The Kosovo government has decided to raise import taxes on goods from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in response to what it feels is Serbia’s destructive behaviour, the KoSSev portal reported on Tuesday.

A statement said the decision to raise the import taxes by 10 percent was taken to protect the local market. The higher import taxes were imposed on milk and milk products, water, biscuits, construction materials and >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << fruit juices.

The decision comes some 10 days after the media in Pristina reported that Made in Serbia goods were taking over the market and that imports from Serbia would total 400 million Euro by the end of the year.

The tax rise for some products from Serbia and Bosnia was proposed by Trade and Industry Minister Endrit Shala. His proposal said that the measure would not include international brand products made in Serbia and Bosnia.

“Serbia sets aside huge amounts of money to inflict damages on the state of Kosovo and a large part of that money comes from trade,” Deputy Prime Minister Enver Hoxhaj is reported as saying. He called the population not to buy Serbian products.

Serbian government Office for Kosovo chief Marko Djuric reacted to the decision, demanding an immediate and determined reaction from the international community which he said has the responsibility to end what he called economic and legal violence. Djuric said Pristina’s decision blocks the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue which can’t continue until the decision is revoked.
