KFOR prepared to react during Vucic visit, general says
KFOR was prepared to react during the visit to Kosovo by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the international force commander General Salvatore Cuoci said.
“KFOR was capable of intervening if the Kosovo institutions had requested it,” Cuoci told Belgrade’ TV Prva commenting the situation around the village of Banje which Vucic was prevented from visiting by local Albanians and Kosovo Liberation Army veterans >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << who erected barricades. The Kosovo police stopped Vucic on the Zubin Potok – Banje road and Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj decided to ban the Serbian president from visiting the village.
He said Vucic’s decision not to go to the village in order to avoid incidents was wise. “If we had intervened, the situation would have been different and perhaps the visit would have had a different outcome. A peaceful solution is a wise decision,” Cuoci said. According to the general, no was in any danger at any time because the Kosovo police handled the demonstrations.
Cuoci said KFOR was the third in line for possible reactions. “If the Kosovo police can’t handle the situation, EULEX reacts and then we do,” the general said. Asked if the reaction would have been the same if some other head of state had been in Kosovo, he said KFOR would have done the same whichever president was there.
