Belgrade: Don’t be euphoric, don’t humiliate Pristina
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic described Kosovo’s failure to join Interpol as a victory of a small country (Serbia) which managed to preserve its integrity and added that was not an opportunity to humiliate Pristina, N1 reported.
After the second round of voting during the Interpol’s General Assembly meeting in Dubai, Kosovo was short of the two-thirds >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << majority of the present Interpol delegates needed to become a part of the international police organisation, with 68 states in favour, 51 against and 16 abstained.
“That proves Serbia has strengthened its position, but on the other hand, we should not be euphoric,” Vucic told reporters in Belgrade said after the voting.
He added that “this is a success of a small, proud and defiant country, but the country which should not position its future on defiance and spite, but on a compromise."
Vucic thanked all the countries which voted against Kosovo’s membership and those who abstained. “But my special gratitude goes to those states which have been under enormous pressure” to vote in favour of Kosovo’s membership.
Earlier, Pristina said it was disappointed with the decion.
Ahead of the Dubai meeting, Belgrade often accused the Western countries of lobbying for Kosovo's Interpol membership, and for putting pressure on some states, especially some African countries.
Vucic on Tuesday also called on Pristina to withdraw the decision on 10 percent import tariffs on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“We will work to show how much we care about a compromising solution with the Albanians, but also to show that Serbia is not a country ease to degrade,” Vucic said.
