Jaroslav Valuch is a co-founder and one of the coordinators of the Standby Task Force - an online volunteer community for live mapping.
He is also the Program Manager for the 'New Media for Social Change' project at the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.
In January 2010, he helped deploy the Ushahidi Haiti platform a few hours after the earthquake hit Haiti. During the three week emergency period, he became the SMS-processing lead. In this capacity, he was responsible for the efficient flow of information from people on the ground to dispatching reports to search and rescue teams and humanitarian responders. In February, he became the Ushahidi Haiti field representative in Port-au-Prince, coordinating the operations with partners on the ground. He collected feedback and explored the potential for a long-term Ushahidi platform for disaster preparedness, accountability and response in cooperation with various local initiatives, radio stations and government officials. In 2009/2010, Jaroslav was a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism of the University of Maryland. He worked for a Czech based international relief and development organization called People in Need, focusing on the implementation of media literacy program into the Czech educational curriculum with special focus on strengthening the civic participation of young people. In Europe, he participated in video-activism projects focusing on monitoring neo-nazi activities and was involved in a number of community projects.
