Commemoration of operation 'Storm' victims in Backa Palanka
Serbia and Bosnia’s Serb-dominated part, Republika Srpska, will on August 4 mark the anniversary of the expulsion of Serbs from Croatia’s Krajina region in the Serbian town of Backa Palanka, at the border to Croatia, President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Sunday.
"We choose a different venue every year. Those are always places that have welcomed Serb people who were expelled from their homes with open >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << arms and with sadness," Vucic said at a joint press conference with Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik.
Dodik is the President of Republika Srpska (RS), the Serb-dominated semi-autonomous entity in Bosnia.
He said that the RS will continue to mark important dates together with Serbia.
"We view this as a question of our integrity," he said.
Croatia regained control over its province of Krajina, held by the Serbs throughout the 1991-95 Croatian war, during the 1995 Croatian operation 'Storm'.
According to the Serb Commissariat for Refugees, 250,000 Krajina Serbs were expelled, 1.856 killed and 836 went missing during the operation.
The operation started August 4, 1995 with an offensive of the Croatian Army, the police and the Croat Defense Council, a Bosnian Croat armed force, against the self-proclaimed Republic of Serb Krajina, which included a substantial part of Croatia’s territory, Banija, Lika, Kordun and Northern Dalmatia.
A day later, on August 5, the Croatian Army entered the Krajina Serb stronghold of Knin, while convoys of refugees were entering Serbia in cars and on tractors and other agricultural vehicles.
