Rans se bavio glumom decenijama, počeo je 1956. godine u filmu "Frontier Woman". Pojavio se u filmove "Apollo 13", "A Beautiful Mind", "Splash", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Parenthood" i "Grand Theft Auto".
Glumio je i u serijama "Seinfeld", "Murder", "She Wrote", "NCIS: Los Angeles", "Grey’s Anatomy" i "Happy Days".
