Unpleasant exchange between Serbia and Croatia goes on
Amid different ways of marking an anniversary of the Croatian army Flash (Bljesak) operation against the rebel Serbs in 1995, top Croatian and Serbia's officials continued an unpleasant exchange of public messages on Tuesday.
Taking part at the 23rd anniversary’s ceremony in the eastern village of Okucani, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that was not the kind of rhetoric to use, commenting on his Serbia’s counterpart Ivica Dacic, who earlier said that “if Croatia >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << wants a diplomatic war, it will get one.”
“The use of the word ‘war’, whether diplomatic or otherwise, is not good,” he said.
Plenkovic added that nobody in Croatia gave statements like (Serbia’s Defence Minister) Vulin, nobody from the Parliament desecrated the Serbian flag…”
He also said that the statement that the two countries were the same could not stand.
“We are not the same in this story, we were not the same in the 90s, and we will not be in the future,” Plenkovic said, adding that the measures taken by Croatia were very clear.
Later on Tuesday, Dacic told N1 that he agreed the two countries were not the same, but for different reasons, adding that “we think what Croatia is doing is a mere stupidity.”
“It’s true we are not the same. We were not on the side of (Adolf) Hitler… we did not force Croats to wear yellow and blue ribbons as they did with the Jews and Serbs during the World War II,” Dacic said over the phone from India.
The diplomatic row between Belgrade and Zagreb has been going on for days.
